Musical Theatre Sound Design

I’ll make sure that the words are understood and that the message is felt.

While there can be a temptation to simplify the role of the sound designer in a theatrical production down to “making sound effects”, the truth is that they’re ultimately responsible for everything the audience, cast, and crew hear during the course of the show. This is especially true (and important) for modern Broadway-style musicals, where everything the audience hears is going to processed and amplified in some way.

Even if a production calls for zero pre-recorded sound effects, there are still any number of sound-related design decisions to be made, including:

  • What sound equipment should be used?
  • How should that equipment be deployed to make sure that every audience member hears the same show, and understands every word?
  • How can the overall sound of the production be used to help tell the story?

Ultimately, someone is going to end up making these decisions; having a sound designer just means that they’ll be made by a member of the production team.

I know what it takes to bring the sound of your production to your audiences: in addition to having several musical theatre sound design credits, I’ve also mixed 18 (and counting!) different musicals, and have worked on several more as the technician in charge of the wireless microphones. By applying this wealth of experience to your next production, I can help achieve the best possible audio-related outcomes for your show.
